Bala Gen-Z Prayer Night 3/10/2025
Owen Cottom
Over 225 years ago a young teenager made her way across rugged mountains and through flowing streams to the find the little town of Bala. Her quest was driven by a spiritual thirst; she longed to own a copy of the bible in her own heart language. When at last she arrived, she was greeted by Reverend Thomas Charles who was glad to fulfil the wish of this young, eager disciple. She returned home with joy, carrying the word of God to her village. Her name was Mary Jones, and her story has left a profound mark on the history of Bala and of Wales at large.
Fast forward a couple of hundred years to the beginning of October 2025 and around 80 young people made a similar pilgrimage to that same town for the Cant i Gymru Gen-Z Prayer Night. Travelling from across the nation through stormy conditions, their quest was also driven by a spiritual thirst; a desire to meet with God and to be mobilised for His mission. When these young people arrived in Bala they were greeted by a power cut. The storm had wiped out the electricity of the part of the town where we were gathering. But the thirst of these young people would not be quenched. As plans changed and the team rallied to light dozens of candles, we began what became a powerful evening of prayer and praise. Prayers were prayed for lost friends & family members. Stories were shared of how God is using ordinary teenagers to advance His kingdom in Wales today. Inspiration was shared from Welsh church history. We were reminded of our identity as children of God. The call to live on mission in the land was heard and received. It was an evening many of us will never forget.
The story of Mary Jones is a reminder that one young person’s zealous faith can leave a spiritual legacy for generations. It is our prayer that the same will be true of Christian young people in Wales today. Join us in praying that these young people would carry the word of God back to their towns and villages, their schools and universities. Join us in praying that the next wave of church plants in Wales would emerge from the faith of these young men and women. Join us in praying that God would continue to awaken spiritual thirst in this generation.
