Lighthouse Church Anglesey

Rachel Radbourne

Ynys Mon, or as it was known back in the Middle Ages, Mon Mam Cymru (Anglesey, Mother of Wales) because of its fertile land and abundant grain production. The island was referred to as the ‘breadbasket of Wales’ with its many mills used to grind grain and pump water to supply food for the nation thanks to its rich fertile soil. Anglesey’s other name is ‘Gwlad y Medra’, roughly translated from Welsh as ‘Land of the Can Do’, a reflection of the culture of the island, embracing the fact that it is an island, separated from the mainland, independent in nature and beautifully unique.

Anglesey has a rich spiritual history, where the island has seen many spiritual awakenings in villages and towns over the last few centuries, such as the 1776 revival in Aberffraw, the 1822 revival in Bethel and the preaching and ministry of 3 great preachers from 3 different denominations; the Baptist minister Christmas Evans, the Methodist preacher John Elias and the Independent minister William Griffith that all ministered, served and planted churches on the island during the 19th century.

However, Anglesey’s rich spiritual history has also long been associated with druidism, known as the sacred island of the British Druids, with many megalithic monuments on the island thought to be the temples and sacrificial altars of druids druidism influence is still big today on the island. There is a spiritual hunger on the island, with psychic nights and mediums becoming increasingly popular in communities across the island.

Now in 2024, Anglesey finds itself in a similar situation to much of Wales with many churches closing, being sold to become homes or holiday lets and tensions rising between the different people groups that call Anglesey home with almost 60% of Anglesey residents speak Welsh but there is also an increasing number of people retiring to the island from across the border.

A Lighthouse Church service

Capel Goleudy Môn / Lighthouse Church Anglesey was planted 6 years ago, based in the centre of the island in Llangefni but now with 7 Small Groups meeting across the island from Llanfairpwll (the village with the really long name!) in the South of the island, to Moelfre in the North East, to Llangristiolus in the centre up to Pencarnisiog on the West side each with between 6 - 12 people meeting regularly, pursuing Jesus, his word and his spirit through authentic community and discipleship. It’s a church with a vision to Follow Jesus, Build Community and Love Anglesey, and we gather altogether weekly in Llangefni, where we hire the local football clubhouse and are now seeing 80 adults and children gather each week for worship and teaching from the word. We are pursuing Jesus together as a Church family made up of Cymry Cymraeg, Non-Welsh speaking Welsh and English that have moved to the island. This means learning what being devoted to one another in love and honoring one another above ourselves (Romans 12:10) looks like in community with different languages, cultures and backgrounds through fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith.

This year we have seen many parents come to know Jesus through the parent and toddler group we run, the school holiday lunch club we provide and through friendships at the school gates. This is so encouraging and exciting to see the spirit of God move in our communities, opening hearts to receive the gospel. It is also stretching our church community as we learn to disciple and nurture those new in their faith and trust in God to provide a bigger space for us to gather together and to serve the community from.

The Lighthouse Church Community gathering

We are sensing that God is once again calling Ynys Mon to be Môn Mam Cymru - Gwlad y Medra, as we choose to step up to be spiritual mothers and fathers to those that are searching for the truth and hungry for the Holy Spirit’s presence in their lives. We are also praying and contending for spiritual bridges to be built and people to be reconciled to Christ and to one another as we seek God’s Kingdom here on Ynys Môn as it is in Heaven.

A Lighthouse Church leadership

Prayer points:

  • For more Small Groups to be planted across the island as places of prayer, discipleship and community.
  • For God to continue to move at the school gates, where 3 families have started following Jesus through other Christian parents sharing the gospel.
  • Strength and courage to build bridges and pursue unity between the different cultures and languages in and outside of the church.
  • We are seeing lots of children come to our Sunday gatherings and bring their families, pray for resources to support and equip or work with children and young people.
